There are so many things to do in the South Taranaki District, which will satisfy even the most thrill-seeking visitor. Some of these include dam-dropping down the Waingongoro River, climbing up Hawera's historic water tower, ascending Mt Taranaki's famous peak or downhill mountain biking for pure hedonistic pleasure!

For those a little less adventurous, South Taranaki is a history lover's heaven and much of this rich past is brought to life at Tawhiti Museum, where you can see realistic life-sized mannequins within historic settings for a dramatic effect. The Turuturumokai pa and historic reserve is just 4km north east of Hawera. Built about 400 years ago, the pa was an important Maori stronghold in an area that has several historic sites associated with pre-European Maori settlement.

Hawera is only 1 hour south-west of New Plymouth, 20 minutes south of Stratford and 1 hour north of Wanganui. The slopes of Mount Taranaki are only 32 kms away and there is mountaineering, hiking and winter skiing in Egmont National Park.
